Apple Struedel Oatmeal

Apple Struedel Oatmeal Recipe

INGREDIENTS:
1/4 cup slivered almonds
1 cup oatmeal
2 1/2 cups water
1/2 cup apple, grated
1/4 cup raisins
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
1 tbsp brown sugar
1/2 cup (approximately) yogurt

METHOD:
Place the almonds in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir frequently until the almonds are toasted and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes. Set the almonds aside in a small bowl. Combine oatmeal, water, apple, raisins, and cinnamon in the same saucepan. Bring to boil, reduce to a simmer until desired thickness. Stir in the brown sugar and vanilla. To serve, divide between bowls, top with 1-2 tbsp of vanilla yogurt and sprinkle with toasted almonds.
Recipe adapted from Quinoa 365 by Patricia Green and Carolyn Hemming.

On Friday, February 18th, our class made Apple Struedel Oatmeal. During that week, we learnt all about the Canada Food Guide. We learnt about all of the food groups and the required servings per day for each group. The whole process of making our apple struedel oatmeal went really good. We all contributed equally and helped eachother out. Everything was good, and when we were finished making it... we realized that we forgot to add the brown sugar, which explains why there wasn't much flavour or colour. So, we just sprinkled some on top and slightly mixed it around just a bit because we had already topped it with the toasted almonds. Our oatmeal turned out okay, but would have for sure been better if we hadn't forgot about the brown sugar!

On February 11, our class made oven fries. My group and I had fun preparing and cooking our oven fries. We learnt how to properly hold knives, where our fingers should be when holding the food, and how to slice and dice potatoes. After, we each took turns slicing the potatoes the day before the fries were to be made. When that was finished we cleaned all of the dishes we used, as well as clean the counters. The next day, we got our potatoes ready, along with our spices. We got all of our spices together and put them in separate bowls. Then, we got our potatoes into a big bowl, drizzled oil over, tossed it around, then added the spices. We then put the sliced potatoes onto a baking sheet and made sure that they were even so they would all cook nicely. After about a halfhour, the oven fries were finished. We tried them, then added a bit of seasoning salt to give them more flavour. They could have been cooked a bit longer to make them more crisp, but we didn't have much time, so we left them. Although, they still tasted good. It was a fun class, and I even used the recipe at home that weekend.

On February 4th, our class had our first day of cooking. It was really easy making the puffed wheat cake, it is a quick and simple recipe to make. Being the first time that a few of us made it, it turned out really good. We were a little bit behind on washing/drying dishes, but had all the other cleaning tasks finished.
